Despite all the things
First Thing Monday, edition #143
Hey readers,
Despite the world going down the toilet, there’s still lots of really cool shit on the internet. At least we have that. Here’s what I’ve been enjoying lately.
Whatever your weird might be, what would it look like to let yourself explore it this year?
A deep dive into ASCII rendering. So nerdy and cool.
I learnt a lot from this article on Google’s new A2UI protocol: Agent Driven User Interfaces Explained.
You’ve probably seen it already, but the MTV Rewind web app is perfect. An independent, non-commercial archival of MTV videos, alongside classic advertising from the era. Its masterpiece, hosting nearly 28,000 music videos and up to 60 days of continuous playback. So so good.
Something for the January Jobseeker … Anil Dash on How to know if that job will crush your soul.
Beyond chat: 8 core user intents driving AI interaction. This article got my cogs turning about interaction design in the age of AI.
As did this one: Beyond conversations: natural language as interaction influencer.
But somewhat related is this piece, entitled A sharp tool can still ruin the cut. A little reminder that as designers, we are speeding up by using AI … but with the real risk that our understanding isn’t keeping up.
I love thinking about adding deliberate friction in user experiences, and this piece, Embracing Friction by Tobias van Schneider is on the money.
And finally. That that little arrow on the fuel gauge of most cars … it’s called the Moylan Arrow. And it’s a great example of good design.
OK, well that’s it for this week. Don’t forget to be well to yourself and those around you.
Ben
